Paperclip Challenge

Back to all tools

Description

  1. Take a simple paperclip.
  2. Divide into groups with the same number of participants. Ideally 3 – 4 people in a group. The task can also be performed individually or working one-on-one.
  3. Agree on a time period, for example 10 minutes, during which the participants should write down all possible ideas  how the paper clip could be used. The team that comes up with the most ideas wins. If the work is done individually, you can set a goal at the beginning, for example, 10 ideas in 5 minutes. Better to aim higher.
  4. When 4 minutes have passed, announce that there are 60 seconds left, then 30 seconds, etc.
  5. Each group presents their ideas publicly. Compare all ideas together, how many overlapped and how many were original, non-standard approaches?
